The Abstract Athlete & Lighthouse Labs

The Abstract Athlete has partnered with Lighthouse Labs, a Richmond-based startup-accelerator, to fuel the fusion of Art and Sports.

Lighthouse Labs is a non-profit, mentor-oriented program that provides $20,000, work space, education, and other forms of guidance to founders of accepted startups.

“The premiere nationally ranked startup accelerator in Virginia” according to its website, Lighthouse aims to mature promising ideas to viable high growth ventures in three months.

The initiative has worked with 33 companies over the past five years, raising more than $25 million in financing — a $350,000 average.

“The Abstract Athlete is extremely thankful for & humbled by the opportunity to participate in the Fall 2018 Lighthouse Labs cohort,” said co-founder of The Abstract Athlete Shannon Cowan. “We're surrounded by an incredibly talented group of fellow founders and an amazingly generous collection of Mentors who donate their time and support to the cohort.”

Among the program’s most notable success stories are PYT Funds, a company seeking to help families obtain access to capital to fund higher education; Nudge, LLC, which sinks data from the most popular health tracker apps and wearables; and AnswersNow, which addresses autism challenges through technology by pairing parents with experts.

The Abstract Athlete will be sharing office space in The Innovation Center at 1717 E. Cary St., a new business incubator, during the program.

The access to capital, connections and customers provided by Lighthouse is designed to allot startups an “unfair advantage in the region.”

"As a Founder, it’s incredibly energizing and inspiring to be supported by the Lighthouse Labs team, Dan, Todd, and Laura, who sincerely care about not only providing the opportunities and resources that our business startups need but also the support that Founders as individuals need as we navigate the journey of entrepreneurship,” Cowan said.
